Good Hope Primary School Nkhata Bay, Malawi.

Thank you for being interested in our little school.
Good Hope School is a small international primary school in the town of Nkhata Bay which is on the lakeshore of Northern Lake Malawi. Opened in 2013.
Our school has 17 children in 3 classes, this year 2016, they are doing reception, year one and year two. The school is taught in English and follows the Cambridge curriculum. The children are all living locally and their parents all work at Mayoka Village Beach Lodge (a small backpackers). The lodge is responsible for the running and financing of the school. The children are in school from 8 am to 2 pm and given fruit at break time and a cooked lunch Monday to Friday.

Our aim is to provide our children with a quality education that is on a par with the rest of the world and give our children the ability and option to continue their education and careers in any subject and in any country. This is not available anywhere near us or in any way affordable in Malawi and so we decided to do it ourselves. Thanks to Mayoka Beach Lodge we are able to rent a suitable building for the school and furnish it and provide enough of the right resources to educate our children properly. The school also employs two Malawian teachers pernamently to teach and provide continuity. However we are always looking for qualified teachers to volunteer with us to provide the international element to the school.

We run the school roughly following the British term dates, with the school year starting in September and finishing in July comprised of three terms.
So we ask our volunteers to commit to a minimum of one term of teaching and allow time to hand over to the next teacher. If able volunteering for the whole school year would be fantastic. We like to have two volunteers at a time but they don’t have to come together, we also welcome couples or friends. Fluency in English is a must as well as teaching qualifications and or experience. Teachers will be expected to take a whole class and be responsible for following the curriculum and working together with the other teachers on subject where the whole school learns together such as Morning circle and creative or sporting activities in afternoon classes.

There are plenty of long week end holidays in Malawi and a weeks half term break when volunteers will have time to travel and see more of the country. Nkhata Bay is a lively, interesting and friendly community where volunteers will find it easy to make friends and find plenty to do in their free time.

In return for their valuable help we provide our volunteers with the following things.
Free accommodation in a private house or chalet on the lodge premises.
All meals are free from our restaurant, including tea/coffee and juices.
Bottled drinks and alcohol are at staff price.
Free WIFI access
Free use of all the lodges water sports equipment.
We will arrange transport from the airport to the lodge on arrival and reimburse you for the cost of visas to enter Malawi.
